Meet Aura: The AI ​​Assistant In New Game EVE Online Is Live

CCP Games has launched Aura Guidance, an in-game AI chatbot for EVE Online in its latest EVE Evolved update, in an effort to help new players as they navigate the early stages of becoming a Capsuleer in one of the world’s most complex MMOs.

EVE Online is famous for its steep learning curve. For decades, new pilots were told to “read the wiki” or “just ask in chat” while staring at a wall of spreadsheets and confusing data.

But what if the game actually understood why you just blew up? Enter Aura Guidance, a special AI created specifically to prevent you from getting lost before finding your first Company.

AI in the Cockpit: What is Aura Guidance?

It’s not just a basic search bar. CCP Games created this assistant by feeding it 5.8 million messages from real Beginner Help chats. He understands the specific and often garbled language of New Eden.

Unlike standard search engines, Aura knows your current status in the game. When you ask a question, the system analyzes your current ship, location, system security status, and even recent ship losses to adjust its suggestions.

Aura not only provides text, but acts as a GPS for the interface. It can physically highlight certain UI elements or menus and provide clickable “show info” links for ships and modules directly within the chat.

To ensure that complex AI calculations don’t cause performance issues (or Aura lag) during intense space battles, all the heavy lifting is handled on dedicated back-end servers, keeping the game client lightweight.

Question Bank: 700,000 Real Solutions

Aura Guidance does not take information from the open internet, but is based on the lived experiences of the EVE community.

Trained for Veterans: The AI ​​was created using a “Question Bank” derived from nine months of Rookie Help chat logs. CCP uses an algorithm to identify “700,000 genuine questions” and successful answers provided by veteran players. This pair was cleaned up and refined to ensure Aura’s suggestions reflected the actual “meta” of the game.

This system includes a built-in “Confidence Algorithm”. If Aura wasn’t too sure about the answer, she wouldn’t guess. Instead, it provides a clickable link to direct players to human volunteers on the Newbie Help line.

Roadmap: From New Capsule to Veteran

The current rollout is a controlled experiment designed to refine the AI ​​before wider release. Currently, only 50% of new accounts will see the Aura Guidance icon. This allows CCP to compare the retention and success of players who have AI assistants with those who don’t.

While currently targeted at beginners, CCP intends to roll it out to all players. This will help veterans who may be experts in combat but “newbies” when it comes to new features.

There are plans to eventually allow Aura to look at a player’s skill queue, purse, and market orders to provide more specific suggestions, such as recommending which skill to train next for a particular ship objective.

The launch of Aura Guidance is one of the most significant accessibility updates in EVE Online’s 23-year history. By turning decades of community wisdom into instant in-game resources, CCP Games finally addresses the “alt-tab problem” that has caused many beginners to log out and never return.
