Russian Government Blocks WhatsApp, Many Users Are Asked to Switch to Other Applications

Russia Blocks WhatsApp – The Russian government has again announced a new policy regarding limiting social media access. After previously blocking access to Discord, the Kremlin authorities have now announced that they are blocking the online communication media WhatsApp in their country. What do you think is the reason for this policy?

Reasons why Russian authorities block WhatsApp in their country

What causes the application to be blocked?

Russia has completely blocked WhatsApp services. This decision was announced on February 12, 2026, and impacts more than 100 million users in the country. The Russian government removed the country from the list of official domestic domains, so direct access to the application can now only be done through tools such as VPN.

The Kremlin authorities argued that this blocking was carried out because Meta refused to comply with local legal requirements, including storing user data locally and providing access to local security authorities.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the block was the result of legitimate legal action and suggested that citizens switch to the MAX messaging app, which is backed by the state as a “national alternative.”

Meta criticized the move as a serious setback to communications freedom and digital privacy, warning that isolation from encrypted services could reduce communications security for users there.

This blocking policy is part of the country’s continued program to control the national digital space. Previously, platforms such as Facebook and Instagram had also been blocked, and Telegram faced access restrictions.

The MAX application which is promoted as a replacement for WA was developed with the integration of various services, but does not provide End-to-end encryption such as WhatsApp, which raises concerns about the ability of authorities to monitor users’ messages and data.

Many observers criticized this policy as an attempt to expand state surveillance of online communications, and reduce the choice of safe international platforms for citizens.

This move is seen by critics as reflecting a global trend in which countries tighten control over foreign services for security and digital sovereignty reasons, while encouraging the dominance of domestic products.
