After two decades of gang warfare and mayhem involving the use of clubs, Saints Row 1 Design Director Chris Stockman told fans that the Boss may have made his final journey and that the franchise could be “dead” after IP holder Embracer Group “haunted” him after he pitched an idea for a prequel.
The video game industry is no stranger to reboots, but the revival of Saints Row in 2022 should be a big one. Instead, it became a tombstone.
Following a lukewarm reception to the latest title and the heartbreaking dissolution of Volition by parent company Embracer Group, the dust has finally settled on the ruins of Santo Ileso.
Responding to a fan on Discord, Chris Stockman, Design Director of the original 2006 Saints Row, declared the franchise “dead” despite his best efforts to “offer a way forward” for a prequel.
The End of an Era: Why Do Franchises “Die”?
The industry recently got goosebumps when Stockman, former Design Director at Volition, shared his bleak outlook on the series. Following the studio’s closure, the architect of many Saint-led adventures acknowledged that the brand would likely no longer exist.
The 2022 reboot was supposed to be a fresh start, a way to modernize the “gangster” fantasy for a new generation. Instead, the project received a brutal reception that ultimately led Embracer Group to discontinue the legendary studio.
Without Volition’s true soul to steer the ship, many feared that any future iteration would simply be a nameplate on a different machine. Unfortunately, it seems that Embracer also has the same thoughts.

Gameplay Legacy: What Went Wrong in Santo Ileso?
The transition from the gritty, purple streets of Steelport to the dusty landscape of Santo Ileso is surprising to many. Fans missed the specific chaotic energy that made the original hit stand out against competitors like GTA V.
While this reboot introduces better customization and a sprawling desert map, it lacks the “bite” of its predecessor. “New Saints” feels more like a startup tech company than a feared criminal empire, creating a disconnect that many players can’t bridge.
The mechanics work, but the heart is missing. Technical bugs at launch only added fuel to the fire, making Premium’s retail price difficult to stomach for loyalists who had been there from the start.
Is It Worth Visiting a Saint One Last Time?
Saints Row may be effectively “dead” as a moving franchise, but its history can still be played out. Whether you loved the wacky superhero antics of the fourth entry or the gang wars of the second entry, his legacy remains intact.
For those who missed the reboot, now is the time to see it for yourself. It serves as the final chapter of Volition’s history, a flawed but ambitious farewell to the brand that once defined the open world genre.
